A small side table made of cedar.
Due to the strongly contrasting colors and slightly bolder style, the piece was named MERICA. This is a nod to the heavy, contrasting style that is more American. The whole is finished with oil.
The cedar used here was harvested locally in Kortrijk. Wood that would otherwise end up in the fireplace has now been transformed into a high-quality piece of furniture.
In this design, the specific color of the cedar is emphasized. By using black as a secondary color in the design, a strong contrast is created, and most of the attention is drawn to the actual wood.
The crack in the end-grain top was also filled with black epoxy to make the whole structure sturdier and to accentuate the crack.
Because cedar is actually a soft wood, three clear design choices were deliberately made.
1/ End grain ensures that the wood is further emphasized by its distinct grain patterns; the annual rings are clearly visible. However, end grain is also harder than long-grain wood. As a result, the tabletop is also slightly harder.
2/ The surface has been kept as thick as possible. With maintenance in mind, the decision was made to retain as much material as possible so that any potential damage can be sanded out later without worry.
3/ The shape of the leaf is not perfectly round and is asymmetrical, organic in form. This demonstrates the link with nature, as the leaf follows the original shape of the trunk. Here, therefore, a conscious choice was made to retain as much usable material as possible with a view to potential repair or concealment of damage during use.
